    Somalian Samosa's

    Somalian Samosa's

    Somalian Samosa's-somalian-samosa-jpgSomalian Samosa's-somalian-samosa-2-jpg

A friend and former co-worker from Somalia shared these with us at a potluck.

She then shared the recipe with me because I loved them so much. I just made them again this afternoon.

    Meat Samosa's

1 to 1 1/2 lb ground beef (Kadija is Muslim so absolutely no Pork, but she said if you want to add some ground pork it's your choice.)
    1 large onion chopped fine
1 jalapino pepper chopped fine (I use a few slices from a jar of jalapino's)
    1 bunch of green onions
    large handfull of cilantro
    1 tsp of curry
    1/2 tsp cumin
1 bullion cube or favorite meat flavoring additive.

Brown ground beef using about 1/2 cup water to help it be faily finely ground up.
add everything else and cook until onions are clear and liquid is cooked away.
Taste the results, test for heat preference. You want this a bit spicy, but not overbearing. Unless you like things very hot, if you do add more spices.

Wrap the filling in spring roll wrappers. There is a method that Samosa's are supposed to be made with that turns out a triangular shaped Samosa. but you can also wrap them like an egg roll and they taste the same. I have done both ways and found the egg roll easier to do when I first started making them.

    Deep fry to golden brown.

Best served hot and crispy with some Sour Cream or French Onion type dip. They're awesome just plain too. Can be eaten cold also, but I like them hot and crispy best.

I also added some Emerils Kick it up sauce and a few mild chopped banana peppers in the past. I forgot the green onions, once so didn't have those. I have also added chives in the past because I had them growing in the yard. so feel free to mix it up a bit and add what sounds good to you.

The first time I made these I actually found and watched a video on how to wrap them online, because even though Kadija had shown me using a piece of paper at work of course I couldn't remember at home. The recipe's online also show the origin of Samosa's as India. There are a multitude of variations including many vegetarian ones. Kadija made veggie ones for us as well, but it's the meat ones above that I really loved.

Kadija said she and her mother also make their own crust instead of the egg roll wrappers too. I didn't get the exact recipe for that though. I will probably always use the wrappers. I had prior to today used the frozen ones. Today I tried some dry wrappers that you soak in a little warm water to soften, then wrap. The dried ones were easier to wrap, but the frozen ones had a nicer consistency when eating.
The website I watched on wrapping included a recipe for making your own dough.

Eat plain or with a dip in sour cream, or Indian spicy sweet eggplant relish.

They are great. We go to a street festival Labor Day weekend every year and there was an African Food booth there selling them. It reminded us that we hadn't had them for some time so that is why we made these today. They are very yummy!!!

I know this sounds crazy but I prefer not to fry (don't tell anyone its because I don't really know how). But could you bake these?

Actually, you probably could, but I haven't tried. The filling is cooked before frying so it might just make a healthier alternative if you baked like a turnover.

I will try to remember to try to bake a couple next time I make them and see. Or if you try before that let us know how they turn out.
