What's your favorite food from childhood?

What's your favorite food from childhood?

My mom was a great cook so I have A LOT of favorite foods from when I was a kid. She cooked a lot of Indonesian, Chinese, and Dutch dishes, and one in particular is called Pastel Tutup. It's a very comforting dish of a mixture of veggies, sausage, diced chicken, glass noodles in a delicious gravy, then topped off with a fabulous "lid" of potatoes, all baked to look like a pie. No one can make this like my mom did.

**(pictures are from the internet, just to show you what this dish looks like)**

Oh, Top Ramen! I have great memories of that one too

Here's another one, this time a childhood concoction: I would take two slices of Wonder bread, spread mayonaisse on each slice, and put a slice of American cheese and a sliced up hardboiled egg in between. YuMmmmmm.....

I really don't eat sweets, but when I was a kid my FATHER would whip up this concoction for my sis/me...
Peanut butter, maple syrup, a dab of butter, and sometimes! some semi-sweet chocolate chips in it... spread this on some sinfully mushy white bread -- and it was BLISS!

I haven't had it in years, but I made it for my kids a few times...

Can't you just hear your blood sugar rising?? LOL!

Sounds divine!! I love eating chocolate with bread. Have you heard of Dutch Hagel (hagelslag) before? it's something I used to eat as a kid...they're chocolate sprinkles that we would put on buttered bread! It also came in this "strawberry" pink sprinkle flavor. And then there's always Nutella of course...droolsville!!

That's what your post reminded me of, Traci

I've never heard of Hagelslag... but it sounds luscious! And I must confess, my kids learned of Nutella quite early on in their lives - but, alas, we never put it on toast or a banana. WE ate it straight off of a spoon!

Ahhhhh, yes... I know of what you speak. We saw it as a kid and invented the white-trash version which was just the brown cake sprinkles on our toast! LOL!
Mom was not amused with our invention... 8-|

One of my favourite foods as a kid was these little pancakes my grandmother used to make us in the evening before we would go to bed. I spent every summer as a child with my sister in Norway, we would stay with my grandparents for 10 weeks every summer. My grandmother or Mormor as we called her would make these little pancakes that she made on the burner of the stove, she would drop the pancake mixture from a spoon, and it would cook directly on the burner, then she would put either strawberries or blueberries that we freshly picked that day on top, with a little bit of icing sugar. Yum

What a lovely childhood memory, @Vikinggirl! I love how many of our favorite foods are associated with our loved ones and memories like the one you shared.

How did i miss this one? Favorite food huh? Hmmmm.... My grandpa used to make the worlds best ribs. We had family gatherings and would eat them like crazy. He passed when I was 5 so we haven't had them since. Every once in a while I can catch a hint of the flavor in a rib but never the same.
My step mom makes the best French toast.... Use stale, cheap white sandwich bread and only dip one side of the toast in the egg mix then cook, leaving one side soft bread still. Instead of syrup we topped it with butter (enough to make a little puddle) and powdered sugar then fold like a taco and inhale. (The combination made it the yummiest frosting ever) this was another meal that we would brag about who ate the most. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......
i know there are more but that's all I have off hand.

Oh my gosh, Lancaster County PA is the mecca for snack and bologna variety's . Everything is made right here between 3 counties . Lebanon bologna and sweet bologna are a beef base and smoked Large rolls in a casing are hung up to smoke in a smoke house at the butcher shops, it's not a brand it's a variety , our deli cases in the markets are so long it take 8 to keep up with the slicing and waiting on customers while you must take a # and wait your turn, that's in every grocery store around here. we must have 100 types of bologna from this area, pretzels and chips too so many kinds and brands, kettle cooked mostly and the pretzels from here are asked to be shipped all over the place. oh yea, and not to mention the ring bolognas kind of like different kinds of summer sausages . our snack reputation in this area are like micro breweries or winery's . to die for
