    I'm MORTIFIED!!!

    I'm MORTIFIED!!!

So this morning I'm doing the breakfast dishes, and I turn on the garbage disposal and it sounds like there may be a piece of fat or something in there. So I turn it off and reach inside but I cannot find the culprit. But during my exploration I notice it feels particularly nasty and gunky on the walls and blades.

Now our garbage disposal has been making a funny noise for months. But it worked and we couldn't find anything wrong with it. The noise didn't sound like a piece of food or anything, more like a blade that was bent or something.

So I found a good brush to get in there with to clean the walls and blades. I wasn't expecting large chunks of grey thick stuff to come out but that's exactly what did!!!

Turned it on and no more sound, it's as good as new!

Okay please tell me I'm not the only one who didn't think if giving the inside of her garbage disposal a good scrubbing every once in a while? I'm so OCD about keeping things clean and it's just something that never occurred to me!!

Ewww...i've done that...sticking my hand into the garbage disposal only to feel it all slimy...yuk! What i've done is dump some sliced up or leftover lemon pieces and then turned on the disposal. Also, I will occasionally sprinkle baking soda and turn it on. I've never actually gone in there to scrub it though. Sounds like that may be a good idea though since now your disposal sounds good!

Ooh, never noticed ours to be nasty but I have heebie jeebies about putting my hand in there so doesn't often happen. I always put lemon or any citrus rinds down there tho and also my boiled egg shells as I peel. (We eat a lot of hard boiled eggs.) my dad says egg shells r horrid for the pipes but I only put boiled shells down there and seems to be ok. I have also tossed baking soda followed by vinegar which makes a volcano of cleaner for the pipes etc too.

LOL, Lisa!!!! I learned this years ago after finding slime in mine. The easiest way to clean your disposal is fill it with ice cubes and put rock salt in it. Turn the disposal on for about 10 seconds, between the ice and salt it cleans it all out. @Desert Sky

Grind up a big ol' handful of ice cubes once a week to keep your Disposall clean and fresh!

(Spent the morning, or a part of it, replacing a disposer in a rent house today.) Yeah, when you look down in them... Ew. :puke:
