    Homemade Laundry Soap for Pennies-Per-Load

    Homemade Laundry Soap for Pennies-Per-Load

I've been kickin' around this idea for a while, and when I went out to start my weekly laundry this morning... I realized there wasn't going to be enough Gain for me to get my work clothes done!

In a huff, which is always a good way to be when you're headed to Wal-Mart, I decided that today was the day I was going to try our GrandMothers' and Great-Grandmothers' recipe for laundry soap.

About $30 later, which includes the big storage container because I have nothing that it would all fit in, I have what is supposed to be about 500 loads of laundry soap!

Dear Hubby had objected to the soap recipe because apparently has has issues with the smell of Fels-Naptha Soap. I, personally, like the smell, but to keep household peace -- I added the Purex Crystals to make smell more frou-frou. (Actually, it smells very nice.)

I am washing my first load of clothes in it -- and will report back with the results! Listen for screaming, in case all my clothes dissolve in the washer? LOL!

All items can be found on the Laundry Aisle at most Wally Worlds...

3 lb box of Washing Soda (not baking soda!)
4 lb box of Borax (20 Mule Team stuff)
4 lb box of Baking Soda (yes, baking soda this time, for odor contol)
3 bars of Fels Naptha soap (can subsitute Ivory bar soap)
1 lb container of Oxy-Clean (for stain removal)
The 28 oz. jug of Purex Crystals, if you want it to smell perfume-y (97% natural ingredients)

If you do the math, it makes 15 lbs of laundry soap! You'll need a big container. I've seen suggestions to use an old popcorn tin for storage...

Cut up the Fels-Naptha and toss it in your food processor, grind it down nice and small.
It is the consistency of hard cheese, so it cuts by hand.
I layered the ingredients by about 1/3 at a time, so I could stir it up better.

It should take just a couple tablespoons of the mixture to get a load of laundry clean! It does NOT suds up, so do not panic if you look in at your laundry and it just looks like water -- if you feel the water, you can feel the soap in it.

    Alllllllll rightie!

Some ink that was on one of my work shirts -- came out!
Some salad oil that was OLD and on an OLD "yard work shirt" is ?? Gone ??
    Delicate panties did not disintegrate!
    Sad panties look YEARS newer...
Everything smells fresh (yes, dear) and looks brighter.

This may be a huge success!

Now, keep in mind that I know we are "grubby folks" so I added the Baking Soda, and Dear Hubby wanted the smelly stuff, and because we're grubby we also added the Oxy-Clean. It can be made cheaper with the original three ingredients. A girlfriend of mine admitted to using only the 3 ingredients, and doing this for the past 90 or so days! And she's perfectly happy with her laundry...

Hmmmm...... Very interesting! As much as it costs to buy detergent if this works that good, I may have to try it.

Don likes the smell if the crystals... He says "it smells like clean laundry."

So, that means it is a success!

The second item is a rack of water for my work pickup, so subtract $4...
The first item is the storage container, $6

    The rest is the detergent-makin's!

I have been using the liquid duggar recipe which is basically the same stuff just with water! (not the oxyclean b/c that will explode!!! Yes I learned the hard way) I just add the oxyclean to my wash load! At first my husband said his cloths (he's a helicopter mech for the Marine Corps) smelled sweaty still. I used 1/2 fels-napatha and 1/2 zote and added the oxy clean he likes it now! I think next time i'm going with a dry version though!

I discovered that the quantity of OxyClean seemed to fade my clothing... I may skip that on the next batch, and just add it when i want it.
    Still using the original batch!

Adding the deodorizer makes our clothes smell nice. Check into adding that, perhaps?

Yes I do use the purex crystals, although I ran out and found a good deal on downy, now normally I use vinegar in my wash instead of softner, that also helps to deoderize, after using the vinegar he said it helped take out that extra stench, I could not smell it but he said when he would start to sweat at work it came out bad from his shirt! I just got a good deal on downy so I'm using that instead of the crystals for now.

I used to use vinegar in my laundry... I'll use some of that! Thanks for the reminder!!
I am really trying to get away from funky chemicals.

From 4/26 to 9/30 for $30 including the container, if I recall correctly.
    Not too bad!

I've not been doing good shirts, etc. with it though.
Jeans, towels, linens, rags, dog beds, dog blankets, woolen Swiss Army blanket/dog crate privacy cover, weekend grubbies, etc.
