Re: Local, farm-raised, seasonal, organic veggies delivered to my door...
I have been neglecting this thread apparently. Beets are not "yuk" they are "yum!" I've been making a pickled beets and onions thing which is really good. Now those Brussels Sprouts would pose more of a problem for me.
I think our local cooperative is something like $300 for a half share. I think that is 6 boxes. But I would like an amount or weight or something.
TO try new things I've been going to a Latin matket (I live in a heavily Hispanic neighborhood, not to mention my husband is Hispanic) and I buy frozen stuff that I don't even know what it is. Often he doesn't either. We may live without poetry, music and art; We may live without conscience, and live without heart; We may live without friends; we may live without books, But civilized man cannot live without cooks.

I love to eat like that! Many years ago, my kids and I would take little trips into Mexico... back before they started killing each other off :'( ... and we would find scary little restaurants to go in. We'd ask our waitress what she had eaten for lunch, and would order the exact same meal! Sometimes we really had no idea what we were eating, but as I taught my kiddos -- if it hasn't killed them off as a culture yet, then it probably won't hurt you either! LOL!
I miss going to Mexico. We had so much fun there... <sigh>
I'll give you the beets and can eat your portion of the Brussels Sprouts for you! LOL!Last edited by TraciInTexas; 02-06-2013 at 04:04 PM. Reason: I got sidetracked...

I missed posting up my last veggie delivery. The most remarkable item in it was a Fennel root -- which I'd never had!
Here is the next one! I got the basil, the sugar pea sprouts (which sprout well in a window sill! Great apartment farming idea!), and some more stinkin' radishes! I guess I should complain about the radishes, Dear Hubby has been eating them -- and the dogs ate the last four from two weeks ago, just a few minutes ago. "Is it a ball? or is it food?" :woot:

I love fennel root. It's quite nice simply roasted with some olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Yum!

I am afraid of fennel, it does taste like black licorice right?

Not really. The bulb-thing part had a flavor, but it wasn't licorice-y. The little fronds on the end taste of licorice, strongly. The stalk-stuff has a hint of licorice. I think the further UP the plant, the stronger the taste.
Dear Hubby isn't really a fan of licorice, but he was OK with the bulb part.

I hate black licorice and dont think fennel tastes anything like that. I use it in seafood soups, salads, roasted in milk. I love fennel. It has a stronger flavor raw.

Yeah, I've not figured out what to do with him yet... been busy and distracted lately.
"The wild cabbage plant is the ancestor of broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, collard greens, kale and, of course, modern varieties of cabbage. The names of most of these healthy vegetables ring familiar to the average diner. Once immensely popular in medieval gardens and kitchens, kohlrabi has played the long lost cousin in the cabbage family for far too many generations. Versatile, nutritious and just plain delicious, kohlrabi is poised to make its culinary comeback!"
Ya don't say... some of my favorite things are his distant cousins...Last edited by TraciInTexas; 04-10-2013 at 02:00 PM.
