Kohl Und Hackfleisch (german cabbage casserole)
**WINNER: Most Unique Recipe August 2013**
I'm back with another German recipeThis was SOOO good, Dave and I both ate way too much of this last night! I used ground beef and followed the directions as follows.
Ingredients:
1 lb lean ground turkey or 1 lb ground beef, have all worked well or 1 lb ground pork or 1 cup bulgur (2.5 cups cooked, also known as cracked wheat) or 1 lb ground chicken, have all worked well
1 medium onion
1 garlic clove, minced, more if desired
2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
1/2 cup sour cream
1 medium cabbage, chopped
1/2 cup unseasoned breadcrumbs
salt and pepper to taste
1 t caraway seeds
Directions:
1) Brown meat, onion and garlic until meat is no longer pink and onion has turned clear.
2) Drain grease from pan and discard.
3) Add cabbage and cover.
4) Cook until cabbage is clear.
5) Add cheese and sour cream mixing well.
6) Pour all into greased casserole and top with bread crumbs.
7) Bake at 375 for 40 minutes.Last edited by bullmama; 09-19-2013 at 02:58 PM.

Re: Kohl Und Hackfleisch (german cabbage casserole)
Sounds good but I don't think the cabbage would go over well with daddy. Lol

Slightly adjusted... I didn't have carroway seeds. Used my latest favorite of Fire Smoked Chili Powder. Texas-ized it?
(The two towns closest to me a New Braunfels and Gruene... so I think German translates into Texan pretty well!)
... Cabbage with seasoning, ready for the pan.
Limping the cabbage.
Without the topping, His & Hers... dear Hubby wanted kielbasa sausage, I didn't.
I'll post the finished product in 40 minutes!Last edited by TraciInTexas; 01-19-2013 at 07:01 PM. Reason: Edited to indicate "adjustment"

Re: Kohl Und Hackfleisch (german cabbage casserole)
Love the picture of the empty dish. Love hubbies! My husband would love this. We both love cabbage. I will try it with the cracked wheat. I am a big fan of the bulgur. I have cracked wheat, coarse bulgur, medium grain bulgur, fine bulgur. Bulgur is a better source of protein than quinoa. I also use it instead of rice a lot.
