Cut Your Round Stuff in Half!
Took me 20 years to figure this one out. I just never thought about it.
I chop just about everything, and one day, I cut something in half and found it to be so much easier to slice and chop from there. Thought I was just plain dumb for not thinking of it sooner, but then I showed a few others who apparently were just as dumb as me because they always cut their round stuff round too! Once I slice in half, getting the disired slice size is easy and less risk of cutting your digits!

Good one, Lisa! I almost cut the tip of my index finger off while chopping a whole onion. The knife slipped on the wobbly onion and I cut my finger; had i cut the onion in half first, then it would have been more stable on the cutting board and much safer to chop up.

Re: Cut Your Round Stuff in Half!
Not to sound superior or anything I think I was taught that trick way back when I was taught to cook, I've always done it that way at any rate without thinking about it. There is also a trick when you cut the onions for fine minced or corse chopped thats all in how you slice the halves that make it easier. I can't really explain it, but if you experiment you can see what I mean.
I cut potatoes like this too when cutting up for potato salad.

I was never "taught" the halve it first trick, but also figured it out...
Maybe this is something so basic, that our teachers never thought to mention it?

I guess we all get there in the end after many years of cut fingers etc.
