Ingredients
• 3 lbs (1.4 kg) beef brisket, trimmed of excess fat
• 2 tbsp (30 ml) brown sugar
• 2 tbsp (30 ml) smoked paprika
• 1 tbsp (15 ml) garlic powder
• 1 tbsp (15 ml) onion powder
• 1 tsp (5 ml) cayenne pepper
• 1 tsp (5 ml) ground black pepper
• 1 tsp (5 ml) salt
• 1 cup (240 ml) barbecue sauce, plus more for serving
• 8 soft, brioche-style burger buns, split in half
Instructions
- Prepare the Brisket: Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and salt. Rub the seasoning mixture all over the brisket, ensuring it’s evenly coated. This step is crucial, as the seasoning will penetrate the meat and create a mouthwatering crust as it cooks.
- Slow-Cook the Brisket: Place the seasoned brisket in a large, oven-safe Dutch oven or roasting pan. Pour the barbecue sauce over the top, making sure to cover the entire surface of the meat. Cover the pan tightly with a lid or aluminum foil. Roast in the preheated oven for 3 to 4 hours, or until the brisket is fork-tender and easily shreds. The low, slow cooking method ensures the brisket becomes incredibly tender and flavorful.
- Shred the Brisket: Once the brisket is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes. Using two forks, shred the meat into bite-sized pieces, discarding any large pieces of fat. This shredded texture is perfect for piling high on the buns.
- Toast the Buns: While the brisket is resting, toast the brioche buns in a skillet or on a griddle over medium heat, cut-side down, until golden brown and crispy. This step adds a wonderful crunch and texture to the sandwich.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Divide the shredded brisket evenly among the toasted buns. Top each sandwich with an extra drizzle of barbecue sauce, if desired. Serve hot and enjoy the incredible combination of tender, flavorful brisket and soft, toasted buns.
