Delicious Homemade Navajo Taco

  • Author: Elizabeth
  • Total Time: 50 minutes

Ingredients

• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 cup shortening or lard
• 3/4 cup warm water
• 1 pound ground beef
• 1 tablespoon chili powder
• 1 teaspoon ground cumin
• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
• 1 cup shredded lettuce
• 1 cup diced tomatoes
• 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
• 1 cup sour cream

Instructions

  1. Mix the Fry Bread Dough: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the shortening or lard until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Slowly add the warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough lightly for 1-2 minutes, then cover and let it rest for 30 minutes. This resting period allows the gluten to relax, resulting in a more tender and pillowy fry bread.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef: In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Once the beef is no longer pink, drain any excess fat. Stir in the chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and onion powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep the beef warm while you fry the bread.
  3. Fry the Bread: In a large, deep pan or Dutch oven, heat 2-3 inches of oil to 350°F (175°C). Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a 6-inch round disk, about 1/4 inch thick. Carefully lower the dough disks into the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Drain the fried bread on a paper towel-lined plate.
  4. Assemble the Navajo Tacos: Place a fried bread round on a plate and top it with a generous portion of the seasoned ground beef. Add shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese, and a dollop of sour cream. Repeat with the remaining fried bread and toppings.
