Ingredients
• 1 lb (450g) ground beef
• 1 onion, diced
• 3 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 green bell pepper, diced
• 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
• 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
• 1 cup beef broth
• 2 tsp ground cumin
• 1 tsp dried oregano
• 1 tsp salt
• 1/2 tsp black pepper
• 1/2 cup raisins or green olives (optional)
Instructions
- Brown the Beef: In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks, until it’s no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat from the pan.
- Sauté the Aromatics: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pan and sauté until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the Vegetables: Stir in the diced bell pepper and continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes, until the pepper starts to soften.
- Incorporate the Tomatoes: Pour in the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and beef broth. Stir to combine, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
- Season and Simmer: Add the cumin, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the flavors have melded and the sauce has thickened.
- Finish with Optional Additions: If desired, stir in the raisins or green olives during the last 5 minutes of simmering to allow them to heat through and infuse their flavors.
- Adjust Seasoning: Taste the Picadillo and adjust the seasoning as needed, adding more salt, pepper, or spices to your preference.
